Dear Lynn, I agree that it's very tricky now that we're enmeshed in Iraq to get out and I have no easy answers either.
It is not unusual for the US to fight a dictator or tyrant we have supported and present day examples are Osama bin Laden, Manuel Noreiga and Saddam Hussein.
Hitler is mentioned because 1) the Catholic church was blessing them the same as the allies and telling them God was on their side a 2) Adolf Hitler - Chancellor of Germany: As German bombs fell on London and Nazi tanks rolled over US troops, Sosthenes Behn, president and founder of the US based ITT corporation, met with his German representative to discuss improving German communication systems. ITT was designing and building Nazi phone and radio systems as well as supplying crucial parts for German bombs. Our government knew all about this, for under a presidential order, US companies were licensed to trade with the ***. The choice of who would be licensed was odd, though. While the Secretary of State gave the Ford Motor Company permission to make Nazi tanks, he simultaneously blocked aid to German-Jewish refugees because the US wasn't supposed to be trading with the enemy. Other US companies trading with the Third Reich were General Motors, DuPont, Standard Oil of New Jersey, Davis Oil Co., and the Chase National Bank. President Roosevelt did not stop them, fearing a scandal might lead to another stock market crash or lower US moral. Besides, the same companies that traded with Hitler were supplying the US with its armaments, and some corporate leaders threatened to withdraw their support if Roosevelt exposed them. Henry Ford was a good friend of Hitler's. His book -- The International Jew -- had Inspired Hltler's Mein Kampf. The Fuhrer kept Ford's picture in his office, and Ford was one of only four foreigners to receive Germany's highest civilian award. As for Sosthenes Behn, at the end of the war, he received the highest civilian award for service to his country -- the United States of America.
So, I don't find Adolf Hitler on another list than the others mentioned.
And, I do support all the causes I can both with money and time and some of the ones you mentioned are included. Thanks for the tip though.
Defend your borders, promote trade, do not advocate pre-emptive wars. If you are going to declare war do so, don't use Executive power to send your countrymen into a war that was not congressionally approved or UN approved. This country is in the shitter, and you wonder who flushes the toilet...it's the men and women you put in the hotseat. We are all acting like a bunch of aimless turds floating down the sewer with no where to go but the water purification center...we drink our own ***, and then we wonder why we act like dumb shits. I am falling from grace by living in this country, because everyone knows a war is useless against an idea. War on Terrorism is a hundred year war, it can never be won...there will always be dissention because Evil is Live. Live is Evil, dissent is normal. Because in a world full of lies and treachery...to be decent, you must be willing to dissent...this is where the word came from DECENT = DISSENT...wake up America, stop lying to yourselves for once in your short lived lives.

One of the Biggest reasons for war, is the fighting over resources and land between tribes. These tribes are just bigger and badder now. But with most of the world claimed by countries, and the most profitable peices claimed by the most powerful countries, the only thing left to attack or take over, is the smaller countries. At the rate of where we are going, either the world will be torn asunder by Wars, or we will join together to PREVENT war from occuring in the first place.
If all countries were to join together, and remove the borders that DIVIDE us, only then can we ever truly be at peace. With no countries opposing, and, as Joshua mentioned, Promote free trade, across the whole world, and allow people to move freely where they chose, when they choose, there would be no war. There would be no distinction of petty differences. There should be none now, as we all live on the same rock, we should all ACT like we are sharing the same house, and act as if we are living with one another, and, in fact, we are. The reason why war is so prominent, is because cirtain countries want to make their own countries bigger, better, more powerful. But, what use is military power, unless one were to use it in a Military act?
Many people do not hold the entirety of the United States in very high regards. But, just as with the middle east, much of the poverty, crime, death, etc., is brought on by the leaders of the countries, not by the indivuals themselves; although they are the ones who put the person in power in the first place..(But who could have forseen the ends to this?). Many Americans suffer because funds are channeled from the peoples betterment, to the bettterment of Military power. What about Health Care? What about good, healthy food? McDonalds seems to have a big role in the everyday diet of Americans, which takes away from money being spent on REAL food, something slightly more expensive than the average quarter pounder with cheese.
And yet, Many Americans take this political abuse. I have lost much faith in Americas claim to be a country who stands up for their freedom and rights. It must be nice to have children to spare, children to send blindly into the arms of Death. It must be nice to remain Ignorant of the wrongs commited in their own country, and yet try to 'Fix' the wrongs in another.
As thay say, "Ignorance is Bliss".
Basic agreement from me Tim. Try this link, I think it says what you are saying:

Enjoy! (And get it everyone who reads these posts!)
Craven,
It would be nice to have a world with no borders where people could coexist no matter what religion they practice, what race they may be, etc. I hope and pray that this may happen over time, but unfortunately I believe we have a very long way to go... perhaps several centuries. As I've pointed out so many times, there are Muslim radicals that do not want to "coexist" and in fact wish to conquer the world and impose their oppressive religious law on everyone. I disagree with your comments about the United States. I believe that although the United States does not have perfect system of government, it is the best in the world as evidenced by it's prosperity, wealth, freedom, diversity, and tolerance with respect to race, religion, etc. Despite your stereotypical statements about our Health Care system, it is still the best in the world and encourages innovation unlike other socialized systems like Canada, and the UK. The United states is less than 250 years old, yet more cures for disease have been invented in the US than in the rest of the world combined going back thousands of years. Health Care costs in the US have been rising lately because of more and more government intervention and socialization, but costs in other countries like the UK are skyrocketing due to the fact that they are government controlled Health Care systems. People in the UK and Canada must wait for months and in some cases years for basic care. Rationing due to high costs means many procedures are no longer available. Many people are turned away even if they have the money to pay for certain needed procedures. I don't want our government tell me what health procedures I can and can't obtain... do you?
Also, your comment: "children to send blindly into the arms of Death" is false. The US military is not made up of children, they are educated adults who volunteer for service. No one forces them to join, so your statement just does not hold any water. Also, despite the rhetoric you may hear from the anti-war element in our country and the rest of the world, they are among the top educated people in the United States. In 2005 over 90% of soldier's that were recruited graduated from high school compared to 75% of the civilian's the same age range. Many studies have also compared aptitude tests taken by recruits which show average scores well above civilians in the same age range. Bela and others can insult our military all they want by calling them retarded, etc., but this does not change the facts. I can say I'm an astronaut who walked the face of Mars, but without facts to back this up its just nonsense. The bottom line is if we decided to bring all our troops home from all over the world, the Muslim radicals would be unabated in their jihad. There would be genocide to the tune of millions and it would start in Iraq. These radicals are on a crusade and they are already guilty of genocide in the Sudan because no one is doing anything the stop it including the UN or the US. War is not pretty and should be avoided at all costs, but unfortunately we are facing an enemy that wants war. To be a Pacifist in the face of this enemy is irresponsible and suicidal.

Bela,
Timothy McVey, the Oklahoma building bomber was one man acting alone. This is what we call a criminal. The Muslim radicals we face today are a giant network of ideologues who have declared war on the "West" in the name of Alla. That is what the word Jihad means.... "holy war". People like yourself who try to minimize this enemy and compare them to common criminals is dangerous. If we had an army of Timothy McVey's recruiting more like minded people to spread their violence then it becomes more than a law enforcement issue. To compare a single criminal to this Muslim radical cancer that we face today shows how completely out of touch you are with the reality we face today. Our President, who by the way is a graduate of Yale and who scored higher grades than John Kerry and many others in Congress understands that this is a war and not an law enforcement issue. Calling the President "below average intelligence" does not make it so if the facts contradict your statements. Like I said before, I can say I'm an astronaut who walked the face of Mars, but without facts to back this up its just plain nonsense. I have to question your cognitive process if you can't believe Osama Bin Laden's own words declaring war on the United States back in 1998. You can put your blinder's on if you want, but my eyes are wide open. There are radical Muslims all over the world that want you and me dead even if it means strapping bombs on their children. Wake up Bela, you are condemning a President and a Country that is fighting back terrorism. You are on the wrong side... unless of course you are a Muslim radical yourself and would like the world to succumb to Sharia Law.
Jeff
Before the Year of 1998, this war stayed more or less confined to the Middle East. There is always a reason for War. Action, and Reaction. If any person in North America were to live even one day in the shoes of any Muslim in the Middle East, that person would very quickly realize the destructive force Countries Such as the United States, any country that tries to apply any of these big companies, such as Wal Mart, and call centers, among others, to a small town, or city, or country, will kill it off.
A very good example is my home town. It is a small mill town, in which a Wal Mart was placed on one end of it. That entire side of the town was Destroyed. Every business other than Wal Mart could not compete. There are two malls there. The one closest Is dead, save for a few larger businesses, such as The Source, and Bootlegger. The town is suffering pretty badly because of it. But this isn't the biggest issue in this. The people here make a minimum of $8 an hour... The people over in the middle east? Pennies. How can one live on pennies? They do not ask for much, but the larger countries are not properly integrating the smaller, older ones into the rest of the world. Call it culture shock.
And then people become angry in our countries, when the people in those countries cry out their despair. We give them mere dollars in comparison to what we could give to rebuild the country. or any impoverished country. And yet, when they become suicidal, violent, destructive, we again show anger, but this time, it is not dollars we give them, but an army, to destroy those that tried to make people see the crime they commit, to see the horror they inflict upon thousands of innocent people, all for the making of an extra couple dollars here. Instead of the funds that can go to these poor and hungry, they instead go to instruments of war, designed to kill them.
The media is another source of the problem, or rather, a hinderance to improvement. It distorts the truth, to hide from the public anything that could be controversial. Anything that the public is not supposed to see, they will not see. Yes, everybodies eyes are wide open, but they are staring at that thing we call a Television.
Our Eyes are wide open, but we are blind to the truth. We see life through the proverbial Rose-colored glasses.
I really don't mean any disrespect, but your explanation here is naive and wrong headed. The reasons you give for Muslim oppression are a direct result of dictatorships, tyranny and theocracies that have condemned the masses of Muslims to live in poverty. Countries like Syria, Iran, and Iraq are rich in Oil resources, but because of their tyrannical style of government only a select few benefit from them while the rest languish in poverty. Just look at all of Saddam's palaces, or the Saudi palaces, or the Iranian palaces, or the extreme wealth for the dictator in Syria. As a result millions of Muslims starve or die from lack of medication because there is no middle class. How can anyone in their right mind blame the US thousands of miles away when its tyrants and other extreme Muslims that oppress and murder other Muslims. The United States gives more humanitarian aid every year to the United Nations and other foreign aid than any of the other countries combined. Whatever media source you use to get your information must have a very anti-American spin. Do you get your news from Al Jazeera or something?
Also, I just have to comment on your assertion that prior to 1998 this war was "confined to the Middle East". What about 1993 when that group of Islamic extremists lead by Ramzi Yousef and Omar Abdel-Rahaman bombed the World Trade Center.... that didn't count? What about 1979 when the Islamic radicals took over the Iranian government? Shortly after that they seized the US embassy and took hundreds hostages for about 2 years. The US embassies around the world are American soil and any attacks on them are acts of war. There have been many many other such incidents which I can list if you want, but this just proves that Islamo Fascism has been alive and well for decades. As tech logy advances and these rogue countries and their tyrannical governments develop Nuclear and biological weapons, the rest of the civilized world must do something to stop them at their source or face massive casualties. Saddam was paying families of suicide bombers $25,000 for each person who crossed over to Israel to blow themselves up. Iran funds terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbolla and provides them with advanced weapons and training. They are killing our soldiers in Iraq and trying to make us fail by destabilizing the government and turning various groups against each other. So far we have the upper hand and we are succeeding in getting these various groups to fight side by side against Al Qaeda. We need your support to continue this fight because it's in our best interest and in the best interest of the majority of Iraqi people who want us to remain there until their country is stable and can be in charge of their own security. If we pull out now, there will be massive genocide in that country and it will fall to the surrounding dictatorships that seek to exploit it's resources and promote their agenda of jihad.
Not quite so Jeff. Timmy didn't work alone -- there were a number of them and there are more living in the mountains in Montana and other outposts with stated purposes. And saying you did service in the air force doesn't mean you did it -- especially in little Bushie's world, as we all know. They are all chicken hawks. My religion is none of your business, but it does not include killing people like Bush's and Osama bin Laden's though, I can tell you that. You don't have to worry about all the poor people in that region who are living under rich tyrants (whom we support) -- you have enough in your own back yard -- or perhaps you didn't see the scenes of the infamous Katrina debacle that still hasn't resolved itself. From the Hoover Institution (that's not the vacuum cleaners either):
http://www.hoover.org/research/factsonpolicy/facts/7088621.html
The United States has one of the highest infant mortality rates of all the industrialized nations.
The infant mortality rate (IMR) is defined as the number of deaths to infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births.
In 2005, the IMR of the United States was 6.4.
In 2004, the average infant mortality rate for the OECD nations was 5.7. (Without Turkey and Mexico, whose IMRs are 24.6 and 19.7, respectively, the OECD average was 4.3.) Worldwide, the average IMR was 52.0.
The countries with the lowest IMRs were Iceland and Japan, with IMRs of 2.8.
The United States spends about 16 percent of its GDP on health care but has a much higher IMR than Iceland, Sweden, and Japan, which spent 10 percent, 9 percent, and 8 percent of their GDP, respectively, on health care.
So you can blather on all you like about how we're number one etc, but you have it wrong. There is a serious misplacement of priorities in the US and our debacles in the mideast and Viet Nam etc. are good examples.
Once again my dear Bela you are incorrect. Timothy McVeigh may have had one or two accomplices (one being Terry Nicoles), but it was McVeigh that orchestrated the entire plot and he himself drove the car with the bombs to the building where it was detonated. This was not the act of a terrorist network or extended group of people like the Muslim extremists we face today. The Oklahoma city bombing would never have taken place without this single man. Not so with the Muslim Extremists we face today. It's very telling that out of all your comments, you have failed to condemn the actions of terrorists. Instead you justify their actions with false statements like "the US supports dictators" which is erroneous and misleading. You condemn me for using the word "radical Muslims" and compare them to an American nut case as if they are equivalent. Your contempt for the United States and the President along with your sympathetic remarks towards terrorists make it clear that you are an enemy of the United States. We are at war with people who kill themselves and their children in the name of Allah, and during this crucial time you are a mouthpiece for these murderous animals by distorting reality and painting the US as an imperialistic, sinister and overall evil nation, none of which is remotely true.
And by the way, George W. Bush did service in the military. He flew aircraft in the Texas National Guard. This is fact. Your remarks are once again fiction and apparently designed to mislead the public into blaming the US for the problems of the world. I'm not going to comment on your Health Care remarks because I want to keep the focus here on the war on terrorism. There is too much at stake to allow your rhetoric to go unchallenged. As I explained before, serving in the military is voluntary here in the United States. No one is forced to serve, and no one is required to serve in order to support the troops and our mission as I do. I support our troops and our country by combating terrorist propaganda since this is one of the fronts in this war on terrorism. You are clearly on the other side, and I'm here to say you will fail.
